Founded in 1922 by Walter G. Winne and Horace F. Banta, Winne Banta Hetherington, Basralian & Kahn, P.C. is one of the oldest law firms in the State of New Jersey and one of the largest full service firms located in Bergen County. Its founding partners were two of the most prominent members of the legal community in their time.
In 1922, Walter G. Winne was appointed United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, the chief federal law enforcement officer in the state, by President Warren G. Harding, and subsequently served as a delegate to the 1947 Constitutional Convention for the State of New Jersey. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Winne also served on the board responsible for overseeing the formation of what is now the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Horace F. Banta served as a former Supreme Court Commissioner and Special Master in the Chancery Division of the Courts. He also served as city attorney for Hackensack and was appointed to and served for many years, the posts of Bergen County Adjuster and Chairman of the Bergen County Welfare Board. Additionally, he served as President of the Bergen Bar Association. Mr. Banta was also heavily involved in the Bergen County Community, serving on the boards of various local civic and charitable organizations throughout his storied career, values he imparted to his colleagues and successors in the firm which remain a vital part of the firm culture and philosophy.
